The air-gap has three tubes instead of one. The first is for the upward drain water, the second is for the downward drain water, and a third is for your reverse osmosis system's product drinking water. The installation of an air-gap means that it will have a wider base and needs to have a larger hole in the counter-top for installation.

Standard reverse osmosis faucets have the drain line water from the reverse osmosis membrane empty directly into the sink drain. A standard RO faucet only has the drinking water line connect to it, instead of the three lines.
